March is Developmental Disabilities Month

03/25/2025

Reflecting on Developmental Disabilities Month

As March comes to a close, we reflect on Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month—a time dedicated to recognizing the strengths, talents, and contributions of individuals with developmental disabilities while advocating for inclusion, accessibility, and support. At Oregon Family Support Network (OFSN), we remain committed to ensuring that every individual, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to thrive in a supportive and understanding community.

Looking Back on This Month’s Impact

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is more than just a recognition—it’s a call to action. Throughout March, we’ve worked to raise awareness of the challenges individuals and families face and to foster a society that values and embraces all people. Families raising children and youth with developmental disabilities often navigate complex systems to access services, support, and education. At OFSN, we continue to walk alongside these families, ensuring they are heard, understood, and empowered.

The Power of Family and Community Support

A strong support system makes a world of difference for families. Peer support, advocacy, and community engagement help parents and caregivers feel less isolated and more equipped to support their children’s unique needs. Through our programs, we have connected families with lived experience, offering guidance, resources, and a sense of belonging. When families are supported, children and youth with developmental disabilities have greater opportunities to succeed and reach their full potential.

Keeping the Momentum Going

Although March is ending, our commitment to inclusion and support continues. You can still be a part of this movement:

  • Continue Educating Yourself and Others: Learning about developmental disabilities shouldn’t stop at the end of the month—keep sharing information to promote understanding and acceptance.
  • Advocate for Inclusion Year-Round: Encourage inclusive practices in schools, workplaces, and community spaces every day.
  • Support Families Beyond March: A kind word, a shared resource, or a commitment to volunteer with organizations like OFSN can make a lasting difference.
  • Celebrate Strengths Always: Recognizing and uplifting the achievements of individuals with developmental disabilities should be an ongoing effort.

Moving Forward Together

At OFSN, we are dedicated to amplifying the voices of families and ensuring they have access to the support they need—this month and beyond. As we close out Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, we celebrate the resilience, achievements, and contributions of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. Let’s keep the momentum going and continue building a more inclusive world—one where every child and youth has the opportunity to thrive.
